“Lookout, SCIENCE is Coming!!”
After all, science surrounds us. Everything we do and deal with in our lives is science. Understanding science helps kids appreciate and relate to the world around them.
In character, Doktor Kaboom is an over-the-top German physicist with a no-holds-barred passion for science (and comedy). Sporting chrome goggles, orange lab coat, motorcycle boots and wicked cool hair, he’s been described as “Part Mister Wizard, part Mr. Rogers,” “Better than Bill Nye” and “Spectacular – nobody can captivate an audience better” (Broadway World).
Seattle-based David Epley (Kaboom’s alter ego), grew up expecting to be many things, including a research physicist, biomedical engineer, mathematician, astrophysicist and marine biologist. “So of course,” Epley said, “I became an actor.”
For almost three decades, Epley has written, directed and performed his original, improvisational comedy throughout the U.S. as well as internationally. In 2006, he decided to bring science back into his life. Blending theater and science turned out to be a dream come true and opening multiple doors leading to the most fulfilling work of his life.
“Teaching, inspiring and empowering the minds of our youth, and reminding their parents to be an active part of the equation – how could someone’s work be any more rewarding,” Epley shared.
In “Lookout SCIENCE is Coming!” expect the Doktor to invite young volunteers from the audience to assist in the show he describes as: “A series of surprisingly spectacular and often successful demonstrations of the physical sciences, with a focus on the scientific method, including an homage to tabletop catapult, illusions of the mind and chemical reactions.”
Through character-driven comedy, Epley strives to empower, excite, educate, entertain and improve society’s understanding that all science is for everyone. “Every child is intelligent, creative and valuable and should know that about themselves,” Epley said. “Science is not hard, but it does take effort. That’s not hard, that’s just work and that’s just life.”
