8th Anniversary Blues, Brews & BBQ

August 27th - Noon to 6 PM | Free Bicycle Valet Parking available

The name says it all – this is a feast of Blues music, micro-brewed beers and BBQ that you won’t want to miss.

Blues, Brews and BBQ features three stages of great blues music and local Bay Area emerging artists from KFOG. The Main Stage, at Dwight Murray Plaza, kicks off at 1 p.m., this year with a nod to New Orleans style music, featuring Zydeco Flames. The Flames’ sizzling roots rhythms are timeless, and the execution of them relentless, with a stunningly powerful groove. Their music recalls the masters, like Clifton Chenier, Buckwheat Zydeco and Queen Ida. At 3:30 p.m. Blues guitarist Shane Dwight takes the stage. Native Californian Dwight relocated to Nashville in 2009 to further his musical career. Within six months of arriving on the scene he swiftly attained a solid reputation as a “guitar slinger.” Not one to completely abandon his roots, Dwight still chooses to divide his time between Nashville and his childhood ranch in Morgan Hill, California. Performing over 200 shows per year worldwide, Dwight has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in music, including B.B. King, Etta James, Jimmie Vaughan, Taj Mahal, the Doobie Brothers, Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys and Johnny Winter.

Two bands perform on the Beer Garden Stage on Coombs Street between First and Second. The David Thornton Band opens up at noon, and the Mighty Mike Schermer Band brings the house down at 3 p.m.. The KFOG 104.5 FM stage, at First and Randolph, and will feature emerging Bay Area bands. How you decide where to spend your time could be as big a challenge as which beers to taste and BBQ to eat.

Napa’s Bounty Hunter Wine Bar & Smokin’ BBQ will sponsor what has become one of the most popular entertainment aspects of the event – a rib eatin’ (that’s right – eatin’) contest that is a hunker down, all-you-can-eat contest between otherwise refined Napa Valley folks. You’ll be surprised how fast a plate of ribs can disappear, and what a mess eating them can be. Competing again this year to regain his title of Rib Eatin’ Champ, which he held for four consecutive years, will be Darren Turbeville, owner of Toy B Ville on Main Street. (Word is that Turbeville, in preparation for this year’s contest, hasn’t eaten since last year, and is ready to pack away a plate of BBQ’ed heaven.) The contest begins at 3:00 p.m. at Dwight Murray Plaza.

You can enjoy plenty of BBQ the way most people will, without having to enter the contest. Choose from a dozen different styles: everything from ribs, pulled pork, chicken, oysters, shrimp, corn and more. Can’t eat another bite? There will be lots of sauces on hand to take home. Tell the family it’s your very own special blend – who’s going to know?

If you are looking for craft beer, you’ll be right at home in the Beer Garden on Coombs Street, sponsored by Blue Moon, Boston Beer, and Lagunitas. You will be able to taste over forty different, uniquely crafted beers, including Anchor, Ballast Point, Green Flash, Heretic, Hop Valley, Mendocino, Napa Smith, Ninkasi, Saint Archer and many more.

For the second time, Blues, Brews and BBQ is proud to feature a handful of wines from the Bounty Hunter stable. Sourcing fruit from top vineyards throughout California, Broken Spur, Ridge Runner and Streamside all deliver where it counts…in the glass. What more is there to say? Napa Blues, Brews & BBQ will be the perfect way to spend the third Saturday in August. On First Street between Main and Franklin. Admission and parking are free. Ride your bicycle, and take advantage of free valet parking.

Thank you to our sponsors: The Bounty Hunter Wine Bar & Smokin’ BBQ, Blue Moon, Lagunitas IPA and Sam Adams beers, Team Superstores, Bank of Napa, The City of Napa, Napa Valley Marketplace Magazine, KVON/KVYN, and Napa Bicycle Coalition. Without their generous support, the show would not be possible.
